Permanent exhibition at the museum in Ostróda – Early Medieval Treasure from Lubajny

We owe the discovery of the site with the early medieval treasure from Lubajny to Marcin Kwiatkowski. In February 2017, Mr. Kwiatkowski reported the discovery of a set of 85 silver artefacts (coins, fragments of coins and fragments of ornaments) dating back to the early Middle Ages.

In 2017–2019 under the direction of Łukasz Szczepański from the Museum in Ostróda, archaeological research was carried out at the site. As a result, 535 silver elements of the treasure were obtained. As of today, the set has 620 inventory items and is one of the greatest early medieval treasures
discovered in the former Prussian lands. The treasure includes European coins and their pieces, as well as pieces of Slavic-style ornaments and of Arab dirhams, which are the oldest part of the treasure. Among European coins,
those originating from the circle of the former German Reich, Anglo-Saxon, Czech and Hungarian coins stand out. The hiding of the treasure probably took place in the early second half of the 11th century. Fragments of a vessel discovered at the site suggest depositing the set in a container that is a product of local Prussian pottery.
